2016 RIG CHANGES - For the 2016 leg of the tour David made a few changes to his rig and added a few songs to the set list. He had already traded out one of the three Boss GE-7 EQ pedals for a Source Audio Toolbox Programmable EQ in 2015, and added a Sovtek Big Muff to the rig in December 2015. As of the Pompeii gig in July, the Origin Effects Slide Rig dual comp was replaced with a Cali '76 compact compressor, which was basically a single comp version of the Slide Rig. Two of the Boss GE-7 equalizers were replaced by Source Audio EQs. The MXR Delay, which was only previously used for a few songs, had apparently broken down and was removed. The Whammy WH-1 broke during the tour and was replaced by a new and improved Whammy WH-5.

For the last few shows at the Royal Albert Hall in September all three GE-7 equalizers were replaced by Source Audio EQs and a Dawner Prince Electronics Boonar (Echorec style delay) replaced one of the Chrono delays to use for the Time intro. Name lables were also added to the MR10 loopers in the effect rack that matched the loop numbers on each pedal.

Below is the revised rack effects and signal chain for the two Skrydstrup MR10 Loop Systems. I'm not 100% sure the loop order is correct for the whole 2016 tour, but the final looper LED labels from September 2016 match this.

David's effects signal chain from the newly labeled MR10 Loop Systems used for the final concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in 2016

In July 2016 two Boss GE-7 equalizers David had been using were replaced by Source Audio EQs for the Pompeii concert in Italy. By the time of the Royal Albert Hall concerts in September the remeaining GE-7 equalizer was also replaced by a Source Audio EQ. These were programmable EQs, each with four presets, allowing David to have presets that were guitar specific and song specific.

Prior to this tour, the use of EQs in David's live rigs seems to have always been either in a loop with a specific effect, to EQ that effect, or used to EQ parts of specific songs as they were on this tour. There were some songs where David used all three GE-7 EQs in different parts of the same song. Then there were times when he would use one EQ in one concert, and a different one in a different concert for the same song. It's the same with the three compressors and three Tube Driver's David used. They were typically song specific, not guitar specific.

The EQ labels in the Pompeii concert showed that there were some specific guitar presets, but which presets were actually used on which songs, and the actual settings, is unknown. There were two EQ's labeled #2, on in the signal chain and one out that may have just been replaced. The one in the pedalboard had "Tele High" and "Tele Low" presets, but he only used #2 with the Workmate for the solo on one song. The #3 EQ had a "Gibson" preset, and he always used that with the Gibson for 5AM. Two of the EQ's had "Strat Neck" presets.

The hand written pre set labels on the three Source Audio equalizers (left) were replaced near the
end of the tour with typeset labels (right), but the presets listed appear to be similar on both.
Below is what I could deterine were the hand written lables on the two #2 equalizers

1. TELE HIGH
2. TELE LO
STRAT NECK
3. FULL ??
4. ?? BRIGHT

On the other #2 EQ that was removed from the board, I see:
1. partial LL. Maybe FULL?
2. TELE LOW
3. STRAT NECK FULL (or STRAT NECK PU?)
4. STRAT NECK BRIGHT (BOOST?)

The presets on EQ#3 look like:
1. GIBSON
2.STANDARD
3. STANDARD LO
4. SORROW

Gilmour replaced one of his two Chrono delays with a Dawner Prince Boonar delay for the September Royal Albert Hall concerts in 2016.
It was only used for the Echorec delay effect from the intro to the song Time.

2015 SONG-BY-SONG SIGNAL CHAINS - This was the first time since Pink Floyd's 1994 tour that David's effect signal chains were relatively easy to see on stage. The loop LEDs on the Skydstrup MR10 Loop Systems were in the same numerical order, left to right, as the numbers labeled on each of the effect pedals on the pedal board, as well as the numbers on the SC-1 foot switcher. I cross referenced video snapshots of the MR10 effects with snapshots of the foot switcher for most of the songs from the Royal Albert Hall shows and other 2015 concerts. That allowed me to confirm the effects matched on each and be sure I had the proper signal chain order. They matched most of the time, but David changed a few loop presets during the tour. I painstakingly examined hours and hours of video and was able to get a nearly complete set of signal chains for most songs performed in 2015. This is a great reference for anyone interested in learning how to set up an effects signal chain.

The settings shown below are from various concert videos from the 2015 tour, but primarily taken from the Royal Albert Hall and Verona concerts where the loopers were clearly visible. I was not able to see the loop switchers in every song in 2015, but I was able to get most of the songs from the 2016 leg of the tour.

2016 SONG-BY-SONG SIGNAL CHAINS AND DELAY TIMES - These signal chains were taken from MR10 Loop System LEDs seen in the Live at Pompeii concert video, the Wroclaw Poland Concert video, a few HD videos from other 2016 dates, and video of the April 11th New York concert I attended.

Some observations:

The signal chains on some songs are exactly the same as 2015, and other songs have only slight changes

Unlike previous tours, David did not blend his Tube Drivers with the high gain Big Muffs

The Sorrow solo was EQ'd from the Source Audio Toolbox, but otherwise it was the raw sound of David's Sovtek Civil War Big Muff and delay. This is the purest example of that tone through his amps and cabs.

The Ram's Head Big Muff was used for the IAT solo and Sorrow solos in 2015. In 2016 David appears to have used the Sovtek for both*, but he still used the Ram's Head for the Sorrow intro/outro.

Songs that used GE-7#2 in 2015 now used the #2 Source Audio EQ.

Some songs that used Flight Time A in 2015, now used Flight Time B.

David switched to a different compressor for some songs than what he used in 2015.

PICKS - As on David's 2006 tour, David used Dunlop Herco Flex 75 1.01mm picks, D'Andrea custom white 354 tear drop picks, as well as Fender 354 and Fender 351 style tear drop picks. In general, I think David used the large picks for the older Floyd songs and the tear drop picks for the newer songs. His pick attack on the strings can be very subtle or very hard, depending on the accent being applied to the note. When playing live, he is very hard on his picks. The edges look like they have been sawed into!

A few of David's used D'Andrea 354 picks from his 2016 tour

*BIG MUFFS MIS-LABELED? - The floor switcher labels were changed many times during the tour and did not always match up to the number labels on the pedals. For example, the Lehle pedal is labeled #20, but the #20 LED is never in use on the MR10, and there are only 19 loop switches on the floor switchboard anyway, not 20. Also, in the Pompeii photos EQ #2 and EQ #3 pedals are labeled #12 and #13, but they are labeled 7 and 8 on the floor switcher labels, which are the Tube Driver numbers. It was easy to sort those out by comparing the 2015 signal chains to the 2016, but not so with the two Big Muffs.

The Ram's Head Big Muff pedal is labeled #5, and videos confirm the #5 LED was lit up on the MR-10 whenever the Muff LED was lit on the floor switcher in 2015. When the Sovtek Big Muff was added in late 2015 it was placed in the #6 loop. All the subsequent loops were moved ahead one position. The loop # label on the Ram's Head remained #5 and the Sovtek was labeled #6. A MUFF 2 labels was added to the pedal. Small black labels were also added above the LEDs on the loop switchers that also indicate #6 was MUF 2.

Gilmour's Electro Harmonix / Sovtek "Civil War" Big Muff from 2016

However, the floor switcher photos from 2016 also show a MUFF 1 and MUFF 2 label, but when the Muff 2 floor switcher LED is lit in the videos, MR10 loop #5 is lit. Same with the MUFF 1 led and the loop #6 LED. Since the MR10 loop number labels clearly show #6 as the MUFF 2, and the #6 and MUFF 2 labels are on the Sovtek Big Muff, I think the labels on the floor switcher were simply never updated. For the 2016 signal chains listed above I used the MR-10 LEDs and the # labels on the pedals, not the floor switcher, to determine which Big Muff was used for each song. Because of the labeling inconsistencies I could be wrong and those Big Muffs are reversed, but I think that is unlikely.
