American Pi:The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi - from Vintage Guitar, March 1994 |
Here is one of the articles that inspired me to create The Big Muff Page. The excellent American Pi article by effects guru Kevin Macy, featured in the March 1994 issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine, is what started it all. At the time, this was one of the most comprehensive Big Muff Pi articles written. It alerted me to a lot of things I was unaware of, leading me to dig deeper in my quest for information about these old fuzz boxes. Several years later, in 2007, I read an excellent series of Big Muff articles on Ron Neeley's Electro-Harmonix Extravaganza website, which also referenced the Kevin Macy article. I had learned a lot more about these pedals by that time I read those, mostly from my own digging and collecting. I thought, maybe I should start writing some of this stuff down and posting pictures online. Then I found Bjorn Riis website, Gilmourish.com, dedicated to all things related to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. The depth and dedication put in to that website (which also included an excellent Big Muff section) told me I was not crazy for wanting to create a whole website centered around these effect pedals. It promted me to pull this old VG article out, but I found my original copy had been lost! I had to track another one down. Rereading recently it, I found it still held up as a great introduction to the different versions of this historic pedal, with much of the information I would later expand upon in my own website. So thanks to Kevin and Vintage Guitar Magazine for getting the ball rolling, although I am still trying to find that Electra Big Muff Kevin said Mike Matthews told him about in the article! Thanks to Vintage Guitar Magazine for granting permission to post this article. |
